After more than two years behind bars, dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel is expected to go on trial today for the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams.

The matter is to be heard in the Home Circuit Court.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, is jointly charged with fellow entertainer Shawn Campbell, popularly known as Shawn Storm, fashion designer Calvin Haye, André St John, Shane Williams and Kahira Jones.

It is alleged that Williams was killed at Kartel’s home in Havendale, St Andrew, on August 16, 2011.

It is further alleged that Williams was killed after he and another man were taken to the entertainer’s house to account for a lost firearm.

The other man is expected to be the prosecution’s main witness.

Williams’ body has not been found.

However, the police have reported that they have video and audio recordings linking Vybz Kartel and his co-defendants to the killing.

In July, Kartel and his then co-accused were found not guilty of the murder of St Catherine businessman Barrington 'Bossy' Burton.

Despite being freed of the murder charge, the controversial entertainer remained in police custody as his bail applications in the 'Lizard' murder case were turned down by the courts.

Supreme Court Judge Lennox Campbell yesterday complained about the late arrival for court of one of the four men charged along with entertainer Vybz Kartel.

Accused Shane Williams, who is in custody, was about 30 minutes late and the judge said steps must be taken that he is at court before 10 a.m. each day.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, is charged jointly with four men for the murder of 27-year-old Clive 'Lizard' Williams. The Crown, represented by prosecutors Jeremy Taylor and Leighton Morris, is alleging at the trial in the Home Circuit Court, that Williams was murdered at Kartel's house in Havendale, St Andrew, on August 16, 2011.

Yesterday, retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Granville Gause said that on August 24, 2011, a man named Lamar Chow was brought to his office. He said he was meeting Chow for the first time.

Gause told the 12-member jury that he did not intimidate or make any promises to Chow, who related an account to him, undisturbed. After the account, Detective Corporal Stewart wrote the statement.

Gause said there were three breaks during the taking of the statement, and one of them was for everyone to have lunch.

After the statement was concluded, Gause said he, along with a team of policemen, went with Chow to a location in Havendale, St Andrew. He said Chow directed them to the location and pointed out a house which he said belonged to Kartel. He said Chow showed them three premises in Havendale.

Cross-examined by Tom Tavares-Finson, who is representing Kartel, Gause was asked whether he thought it prudent to ascertain Chow's correct name. He said 'yes'. Asked what was Chow's correct name, Gause said it was Leonard Chow, otherwise called 'Pow', and he got the name from a reliable source.

Asked if he sought to ascertain Chow's identification from an independent means, Gause said he did not consider that important.

Asked if the informant who brought Chow to his office was someone who was offered monetary reward, Gause said 'yes'. Gause said at the time the informant brought Chow to his office, the informant was not acting as a paid informer.

Witness saw 'Lizard' lying motionless at Kartel's house

Published: Wednesday | November 27, 2013 1 Comment

Barbara Gayle, Justice Coordinator

The main witness for the prosecution testified yesterday at the murder trial of entertainer Vybz Kartel and his four co-accused that on August 16, 2011, he saw Clive 'Lizard' Williams lying motionless on the living room floor at Kartel's house in Havendale, St Andrew.

He said he and Williams were taken in a taxi to the house, where Kartel questioned them about two missing guns, and Williams said they planned to buy back the guns.

The Crown is alleging at the trial in the Home Circuit Court that Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer; entertainer Shawn Campbell, popularly known as Shawn Storm; André St John; Shane Williams; and Kahira Jones, murdered Williams on August 16, 2011.

The witness said that on the afternoon of August 16, 2011, he was called to Campbell's home in Waterford, St Catherine. When he went there, he saw Williams at Campbell's gate. He said Campbell told Williams that Kartel wanted to see him because since the guns went missing, he had not seen them.

He said he left for his home and some time later that evening, he saw Williams and Campbell come to his gate in a taxi. He went with them in the taxi and they all went to a house in Havendale.

When they arrived at the gate, St John was at the premises; he opened the gate and they went inside. The taxi driver did not go inside with them. He said Kartel invited them inside the house.

Questioned by prosecutor Jeremy Taylor as to what happened inside the house, he said Kartel asked what happened.

RAN OUT OF FEAR

He said he told Kartel that he was at work, and that it was Brown and Lizard who had gone for the guns, and Lizard said he had given Brown the guns to put back. Kartel then asked what they planned to do, and Lizard told him that they planned to buy back the guns.

The witness said that Jones then held Lizard and he (witness) ran to a back room because he feared that something was going to happen to him, too.

He said Kartel and Shawn Storm brought him back to the living room, where he saw Williams lying motionless on the floor and St John holding a building block in his hand, while Jones was bending over Lizard. He said he felt he was going to be next, so he ran from the house, jumped the gate, and went on to the road. He said he saw Kartel following him.

Kartel told him it was a man called 'Brown' and Lizard who had stolen the guns. He said Kartel, who was limping, said a dog had bitten him and he wanted to go to the hospital. The witness said he stopped a taxi and went with Kartel to the hospital.

After they left the hospital, he went to Waterford that night, where he saw Campbell, who told him not to tell anyone that Lizard went into the taxi with them earlier that evening. He said he did not hide the information.

Witness quizzed on letter in Kartel case

Published: Friday | November 29, 2013 0 Comments

Barbara Gayle, Justice Coordinator

Defence attorney Michael Lorne yesterday questioned the prosecution's main witness in the Vybz Kartel murder trial about a letter which he allegedly wrote in November 2011 and had delivered to Public Defender Earl Witter.

On being asked if he at anytime wrote a letter to the public defender stating, "why I don't want to come to court is because I see Clive after that", the witness said he did not write such a letter.

The witness was further asked if he wrote in the letter that "the purpose of this letter is to inform you that the statement taken by the police by me was not willing".

The witness responded: "I did not write a letter, sir."

He said nobody from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had ever shown him such a letter.

Lorne suggested to the witness that he had given his aunt the letter to take to the public defender in November 2011, but the witness said the first time he was hearing about the letter was when Kartel's lawyer, Tom Tavares-Finson, mentioned it in court yesterday.

The Crown, represented by prosecutors Jeremy Taylor and Leighton Morris, is alleging that on August 16, 2011, Kartel and his four co-accused murdered 27-year-old Williams of Waterford, St Catherine, at Kartel's house at 7 Swallowfield Avenue, Havendale.

It is being alleged that Williams was murdered over two missing guns.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, is charged jointly with entertainer Shawn Campbell otherwise called Shawn Storm, Shane Williams, Kahira Jones and Andre St John.

Witness admits error

The witness had testified this week in the Home Circuit Court that Campbell and Kartel had said he should go to Guyana with them on August 18, 2011, because they did not want anyone to question him.

Questioned further by Lorne, who is representing Campbell, the witness said on August 17, 2011, it was Campbell who telephoned him and told him that he was taking him to Guyana.

When he was shown his statement to the police, he admitted it was when he walked down to Campbell's house that Campbell said he was going to Guyana. He denied the suggestion that he was the one who asked Campbell if he could go to Guyana. It was suggested to the witness that 'Lizard' had only gone to the guest house in Havendale but the witness said he, Campbell and Lizard went inside Kartel's house on August 16, 2011.

Lorne pointed out that a page was missing from the witness' typed statement and Justice Lennox Campbell has asked the prosecutors to provide the missing page today to the defence lawyers and make attempts to find the original statement.

Taylor explained that the prosecutor who had conduct of the case, had since died and they had searched for the statement but could not find it.

Witness says he was at Kartel's house when 'Lizard' was killed

THE prosecution's main witness in the murder trial of entertainer Vybz Kartel and four co-accused men admitted yesterday, under cross-examination, that he had testified to things that were not in his statements to the police.

However, he denied suggestions from attorney Tamika Harris that he was making up things on the stand, and insisted that he was present when his friend Clive 'Lizard' Williams was killed in a house in Havendale, St Andrew, on August 16, 2011.

Also yesterday, a letter to Public Defender Earl Witter, that defence attorneys believe was written by the key prosecution witness, was disclosed to the court. The contents of the letter were not revealed in court, but the witness is believed to have written to the public defender complaining that he had been forced to give his statements and that he had seen Williams since August 16, 2011, the day on which Williams is said to have been killed.

The letter was expected to be examined to determine if the witness is its author as he has denied penning the document.

Kartel (real name Adidja Palmer), Kahira Jones, Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell, André St John, and Shane Williams are being tried in the Home Circuit Court for Williams' murder.

During the cross-examination by Harris, who is representing St John, the witness agreed, after being showed his statements, that there was nothing in them about him seeing men peeping out of a room when Williams was being beaten, and that he told the taxi driver who took him to the house in Havendale to wait for him.

Harris suggested to the witness that nothing like that is in the statements to the police because he was making things up on the witness stand, but he denied the suggestion.

"It is not the truth," Harris said.

"It is the truth, Miss," said the witness, who continued to give evidence with his head hung, seemingly avoiding eye contact with the accused and even the attorneys who questioned him.

The witness denied suggestions that he didn't see Williams motionless on the floor inside the house. He also denied a suggestion that he didn't see St John with a cinder block standing over Williams.

Harris suggested that the witness could not have seen these things of which he had previously testified because he was outside of the yard, where he was kept at bay by the dog, and that he was escorting Kartel to the hospital after his own dog bit him. But the witness shot back, "No, Miss."

The witness completed his last day on the stand yesterday. But he could be recalled for further questioning in relation the letter allegedly written to the public defender.

The trial continues toda

VYBZ KARTEL TRIAL: Another Christmas in jail for Kartel

Published: Friday December 13, 2013 | 5:42 pm 0 Comments

It appears that dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel will spend another Christmas in jail after the Supreme Court revealed today that his murder trial will go into the New Year.

Kartel was arrested in September 2011 for the alleged murder of 27-year-old dancer Clive 'Lizard' Williams a month earlier.

Today Justice Lennox Campbell told the 12-member jury to confer among themselves and give their input on the days on which the trial should proceed during the legal vacation which starts on December 20 and ends on January 6.

He told them it did not appear as if the state will be able to complete the case before the holidays begin and that it was likely the matter would be adjourned next Friday.

The judge said so far it has been suggested that the court should reconvene on December 30 or on January 2.

Mario Assad, the group chief technology officer at telecommunications provider Digicel, testified at the trial in the Home Circuit Court today.

After his testimony, the jurors were told to return next week Tuesday afternoon.

On Monday the court will continue to hear the evidence of former head of the police cyber crimes unit Sergeant Patrick Linton in the absence of the jury.

Linton who has been testifying since last week Thursday was given a break today.

Kartel whose real name is Adidja Palmer is charged jointly with fellow entertainer Shawn Campbell also known as Shawn Storm, Kahira Jones, Shane Williams and Andre St John for the August 16, 2011 alleged murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams.

The Crown is alleging that Williams was beaten to death over two missing guns.

KINGSTON, Jamaica:
Justice Lennox Campbell has ruled that video and other evidence may be admitted as evidence in the Vybz Kartel murder trial.

Lawyers this afternoon completed their submissions in relation to the hearing and Justice Campbell then made the ruling.

It is understood that this will entail all the material which the prosecution had sought to have tendered into evidence.

For several weeks the court had been hearing evidence from witnesses including cyber crimes expert Detective Sergeant Patrick Linton.

Detective Sergeant Linton was the head of the Police Forensic and Cybercrimes Unit at the Organised Crime Investigation Division when the police carried out its investigation into the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams.

The police had reported that they have video and audio recordings linking Vybz Kartel and his co-defendants to the killing.

Kartel is jointly charged with fellow entertainer Shawn Campbell also known as Shawn Storm, Kahira Jones, Shane Williams and Andre St John for the August 16, 2011 murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams.

KARTEL... on trial for murder

DAMNING BlackBerry messages and video footage painted a trail of possible involvement in the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams by Vybz Kartel and his four co-accused in the riveting trial in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston yesterday.

People in the court had their mouths agape when a message sent from a cellular phone attributed to Vybz Kartel, on August 19, 2011 was displayed on a screen and read out by prosecution witness, Detective Sergeant Patrick Linton.

"Tween me an u a chop we chop up the bwoy Lizard fine fine and dash him way inuh. As long as u live dem can never find him," the message stated.

Yet another read: "Yeah man a mince meat dat."

But defence attorney Tom Tavares-Finson objected to the evidence and claimed that Linton had tampered with it.

When the message was first displayed only the words 'Tween me and u' were visible.

However, after Linton adjusted the format the entire sentence appeared and Tavares-Finson objected furiously.

This caused fireworks to fly between himself and Justice Lennox Campbell, who allowed the evidence.

"With the greatest of respect, Your Lordship is ignoring me," Tavares-Finson said angrily.

"Mr Finson, you don't tell what to determine. I will determine that. You will get your chance during cross-examination," Justice Campbell said sternly.

"And you determination is?" Tavares-Finson asked.

"That you sit down," the judge shot back.

At points during the trial, Kartel and Andre 'Mad Suss' St John could be seen leaning over and speaking in hushed tones. It appeared neither was happy with the presentation of the evidence.

Kartel and St John are jointly charged with Shane Williams, Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell and Kahira Jones with the murder of Clive Williams, who police say was beaten to death at a house owned by Kartel in Havendale, St Andrew.

Linton also read a message which suggested Kartel's involvement with guns, two of which police said had gone missing and were the catalyst for the murder.

"Me tell Shawn say him haffi buy dem back and mi still gi him a new 45 weh me just get fi watch him head and me tell him say any man missin dis same treatment," the message stated.

Another set of messages also suggested that Kartel was trying to flee the island and was worried about the probe into the murder.

"Member say a me name WORL BOSS so a mi dem a go send fah. But only 'wee' or 'Shawn can sink we so we haffi watch if police ago pick dem up," one stated.

"Forensic and Crime Scene de a Havendale a look blood sample and DNA," another message read.

"Dawg a bare f.....y me ago tek weh meself pan a boat or somn. It look serious as f...," the evidence tendered by the prosecution continued.

"From you a do crime you ever see forensic get involve like this?" another read.

"Me deh far dats if anything me can leave," another message read.

"If me haffi lef di island fast you can assist me?" yet another read.

"U have a link that can make me lef the island fast?"

"Yeah by boat."

Make me know before it get too hot."

At times during Linton's sworn testimony the 12-member panel of jurors seemed riveted, paying keen attention.

The prosecution also tendered into evidence video footage lasting two minutes and 17 seconds which was allegedly recorded at the Havendale house on a cellular phone on August 16, 2011, the day when police say Williams was killed.

The video did not show any faces, but was nonetheless disturbing.

At the beginning of the clip, a man in a red shirt is seen holding a pickaxe and remarked: "Rocky, yow hear we me say a dis me ago use and kill him enuh."

There were other voices heard saying.

"Chop him inna him neck."

"Hold him down and cut him throat."

"Stab him inna him neck."

"You have a knife?"

"Me nuh have no knife."

"You have a gun?

"Me nuh have no gun."

"How unu a par wid the Worl' Boss and nuh have nutten?"

"You nuh haffi swing it so hard and mek it ketch me."

"Weh Wee deh? Me want him see wha a go gwaan, is him a go die anyhow him keep up any likkle f.....y again. Weh Wee? Weh Wee?"

The prosecution also tendered into evidence more voice notes and snapshots taken by Linton from the video recording.

"Yeah, but problem child, if dem cut weh dem a go cut go? a dat a di r...s question. Hombre, dem man deh caayn cut, but if dem ever, a Shawn Storm a go buy dem back," one voice note said.

"Me a wait pan di (expletive) dem fi link me back and see wha dem a do if dem know a dem a go get (expletive)," another said.

The snapshots taken from the video showed a man inside a room with the words PH barely visible on his shirt, but in another photograph Vybz Kartel is seen posing beside a Toyota Lexus sport utility vehicle with a shirt with the word TRIUMPH emblazoned on the chest.

The trial is expected to continue today and defence attorneys will get the chance to cross-examine Linton.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The lead investigator in the alleged murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams testified Tuesday that he smelled a foul odour “like the scent of a dead animal” inside the Hevendale home of entertainer Vybz Kartel, where Williams is believed to have been killed.

He said he noticed the smell when he visited the house on August 29, 2011.

Deputy Superintendent of police Vern Thompson, the man in charge of criminal investigations for the St Andrew North Police Division, testified also that the house was set on fire after his first visit on August 22, 2011, as part of a probe.

He said that the caution tape that he strung around the perimeter of the property was also torn down. The tape was replaced, Thompson said.

Additionally, Thompson, who was being led in his examination-in chief by senior prosecutor Jeremy Taylor, told the court that on a subsequent visit to the house on September 30 he noticed that the back of the house had been demolished and the police tape again torn down

Police believe Williams was killed on August 16, 2011.

Kartel and co-accused, fellow entertainer Shawn Campbell, popularly known as Shawn Storm, André St John, Shane Williams and Kahira Jones are on trial for the murder.

VYBZ KARTEL MURDER TRIAL: Prosecution's main witness arrives, face covered, heavy security escort

Published: Thursday February 6, 2014 | 10:46 am 0 Comments

Barbara Gayle, Justice Coordinator

KINGSTON, Jamaica:
The main witness in the State’s case against entertainer Vybz Kartel arrived at the Supreme Court building in downtown, Kingston under heavy security escort moments ago.

His face was covered while being led into the Supreme Court building which is hosting the Home Circuit Court murder trial involving Kartel and four co-accused.

The witness is being recalled by the prosecution as the trial enters its 45th day.

The prosecution has so far called 24 witnesses at the trial, which began in November last year and is said to be one of the longest criminal trials in a circuit court in Jamaican history.

The witness is expected to be asked questions in relation to electronic evidence submitted in the case.

The prosecution has submitted text messages, video footage and messages allegedly taken from a BlackBerry cellphone attributed to Kartel.

The witness has testified that he and Clive 'Lizard' Williams were taken in a taxi to Kartel’s Havendale house where the entertainer questioned them about two missing guns.

He also testified that they were attacked and that he saw Williams lying motionless on the living room floor of the house.

The witness also testified that he was able to see what happened because of a light on a cellular phone.

The Crown is alleging that Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer; entertainer Shawn Campbell, popularly known as Shawn Storm; André St John; Shane Williams; and Kahira Jones, murdered Williams on August 16, 2011

Witness says voice on video is Kartel's

Vybz Kartel

THE main witness in the Vybz Kartel murder trial yesterday attributed voice notes threatening death against himself and Clive 'Lizard' Williams over two missing 'shoes' as those of the popular entertainer. The witness also attributed voices heard on a video to Vybz Kartel and co-accused Shane Williams.

The evidence came on a day that saw the number 11 juror being released from the 12-panel jury due to "personal reasons". In releasing the juror following the luncheon adjournment, Justice Lennox Campbell thanked her for her service before proceeding with the trial with the remaining jurors.

During the morning session of the hearing in the Home Circuit Court, 22 voice notes were played for the witness -- most filled with threats about killing 'Lizard' and other men if the 'shoes' were not returned on the evening of August 14, 2011, two days before Williams was allegedly killed over the disappearance of two illegal guns.

The witness, who testified that he knew the entertainer for six years, identified the voice as Kartel's. He explained, under questioning from Justice Lennox Campbell, that 'shoes' meant gun.

No faces could be seen in the video, but the witness identified the voice on it asking if "this can kill him" as Kartel's.

However, during the afternoon session attorney Tom Tavares-Finson, who appears for Vybz Kartel, and attorney Everton Dewar (Shane Williams' attorney) attacked the witness on the issue of voice identification.

Tavares-Finson was strident in his examination of the nervous-looking witness, who spoke with his head hung for most of his time in the witness box. Tavares-Finson suggested to the witness that the voice he identified had been "manipulated", and "tacked together..., but the witness answered "No, sir." The attorney further suggested that the voices on the video were also manipulated by the police, but again the witness responded, "No, sir."

"How you know that?" Tavares-Finson asked, to which the witness responded, "Me know them, sir."

Similarly, Dewar attacked the witness, telling him that he had never spoken to Sean Williams before. But the witness said he had. At this point, Justice Campbell intervened in the questioning, as he often does throughout the trial, to pose his own questions. In response, the witness said that Clive Williams and Shane Williams would often talk and that he would interject during the conversations.

"You are telling this court that one of the voices you heard is Shane Williams'?" Dewar asked.

"Yes, sir," the witness said.

Dewar solicited laughter from the jurors and others attending the proceedings when he told the witness, "You can look at me enuh. I know I'm not beautiful, but you can look at me." The witness looked at Dewar and smiled before assuming his usual posture.

The witness denied a later suggestion that the voice he heard on the video didn't belong to Williams.

Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer; Shawn Campbell, popularly known as 'Shawn Storm'; André St John; Williams; and Kahira Jones have been on trial since last November. The body of Clive Williams has not been found.

Yesterday, during the morning session, senior prosecutor Jeremy Taylor showed the witness a picture of individuals whom he described as Vybz Kartel, St John, Shane Williams and other men who are not before the court.

The witness had given evidence prior to yesterday that he was at Vybz Kartel's Havendale, St Andrew home when Clive Williams was being beaten and that he (the witness) ran from the house.

Yesterday, Tavares-Finson examined him about a letter he purportedly wrote to the public defender about the incident. But the witness denied suggestions from the attorney that he wrote the letter and denied that it was his handwriting. Tavares-Finson suggested that he wrote the letter in the presence of his aunt, but he denied that as well.

"In the letter you indicated that you were here by virtue of force by the police," Tavares-Finson said.

"No, sir," the witness retorted.

He denied a further suggestion that he wrote to the public defender saying that he "didn't want to continue with the police's design to convict these men". He also denied that he wrote that he saw Clive Williams after the night of August 16, 2011 and that he did not give his statement to the police freely.

Under cross-examination from attorney Michael Lorne, who is representing Campbell, the witness said that he heard the name Shawn in the video that was played.

"What did you hear in relation to Shawn?" the attorney asked. "I just heard the name Shawn and it cut off," the witness responded.

Attorney Pierre Rogers, who represents Jones, asked the witness when he first saw the pictures he was shown in court and he said it was during a hearing outside the presence of jurors in court last year. Asked if the police had shown him the pictures, he said, "Nobody neva show me them before."

The trial continues on Monday with Rogers' continued examination of the witness.

JUST IN: Judge Rules Vybz Kartel and Co-Accused have Case to Answer

Published: Wednesday February 12, 2014 | 10:39 am 0 Comments

The judge in the Vybz Kartel murder trial has thrown out an application by defense lawyers to have the case dismissed.

Justice Lennox Campbell moments ago ruled that Kartel and his four co-accused have a case to answer.

The Crown is alleging that Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer; entertainer Shawn Campbell, popularly known as Shawn Storm; André St John; Shane Williams; and Kahira Jones, murdered Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams on August 16, 2011.

It is alleged that Williams was killed at Kartel’s Havendale, St Andrew house over two missing guns.

Defense lawyers completed their submissions to the judge in the absence of the jury yesterday, after which lead prosecutor, Jeremy Taylor responded on behalf of the Crown.

The case will now continue in the presence of the jury.

Yesterday, Justice Campbell assured the 11-member jury that by next week, he will hand over the case to them for their deliberation.

Kartel... anxiously awaiting the verdict of the jury and very relieved that he got the opportunity to deliver his statement to the court

TOM Tavares-Finson, lead attorney representing jailed dancehall deejay Vbyz Kartel, says his client is anxious as his murder case winds down.

"He's anxiously awaiting the verdict of the jury and very relieved that he got the opportunity to deliver his statement to the court," Tavares-Finson told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.

Tavares-Finson, who described the case as a benchmark due to the volume of telecoms evidence, said Kartel's general impression is that his emotional statement on Wednesday was well received.

"He is quietly confident in his legal team," said Tavares-Finson.

In addition to Tavares-Finson, Kartel is being represented by Christian Tavares-Finson.

Kartel (given name Adidja Palmer) is jointly charged for the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams of Waterford, St Catherine. Entertainer Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell, Kahiro Jones, Shane Williams and André St John are also charged.

In his plea, the entertainer came close to tears as he addressed the 11-member jury at the Supreme Court in Kingston. He asked them not to judge him by his appearance as his tatoos and bleached skin were tools of his trade.

Tavares-Finson said to maintain his sanity, Kartel writes music, reads and focuses on several social projects he wants to implement in Portmore, St Catherine, where he grew up.

"I saw him with Tom Reiss's book, The Black Count. It is a historical account of French General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas," he said.

Tavares-Finson, who expects a verdict by the next two weeks, expressed confidence that his client will be exonerated.

"I am confident about my legal team, supported by the technical staff, research staff, and the telecoms experts have done their best. I too anxiously await the verdict and the Big Man above," he said.

Kartel, who has been in jail since September 2012, is known for hits like Clarks (featuring Popcaan), Emergency and Romping Shop (done with Spice). His latest album, Kartel Forever Trilogy, was released last September.
