FORMER Prime Minister of Jamaica Orette Bruce Golding will be the presenter at The CIN Lecture Series in New York at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 7pm.
Golding gave 35 years of service in the Parliament of Jamaica from the early age of 24. Founder and first President of the National Democratic Movement, Golding was elected Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in 2005 and in 2007 was elected as Jamaica's eighth Prime Minister. He served for four years before his resignation and retirement in 2011. He led the JLP to victory in 2007 after they were in Opposition to the People's National Party for 19 years.
Considered by many as one of Jamaica's greatest orators and finest political minds, Golding's topic for this year's Lecture Series will be "Jamaica's Challenges, Opportunities and Imperatives".
The "CIN Lecture Series" has become one of the premier Caribbean events in New York, and attracts a large cross-section of diplomats, media, business and religious leaders, college professors and other members of the Caribbean community. Each year the Lecture Series has attracted a capacity audience of 600 people to the Schomburg Center, and the presentation is subsequently aired on CINTV reaching the over two million Caribbean-Americans in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Presenters over the last eight years include Robert Hill, who spoke on "Marcus Garvey"; Rex Nettleford, whose subject was "The Caribbean Diversity: A Defining Point in the History of the Americas"; Edward Seaga, who spoke on "The Folk Root of Jamaican Cultural Identity"; PJ Patterson, whose subject was "The Importance of the Caribbean Diaspora to Economic Development"; Lowell Hawthorne whose topic was "The Importance of Entrepreneurship and its Contribution to Wealth Creation", Ronnie Thwaites, who spoke on "The agony of change and the prospect of a new beginning in Jamaica", Greg Christie who spoke on "The Fight to Secure Integrity, Transparency and Accountability in the Award of Government Contracts in Jamaica", and Douglas Orane who spoke on "The Key to Prosperity in Jamaica" last year.
