DUNEDIN, New Zealand — New Zealand's Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor tamed the toothless West Indies attack on the opening day of the first Test yesterday, both scoring centuries as the home side reached an imposing 367 for three.
At close of play McCullum was 109 not out off just 122 balls, with Taylor unbeaten on 103. Hamish Rutherford (62) and Peter Fulton (61) earlier chipped in with half-centuries on a dispiriting day for the tourists.

New Zealand lost the toss but quickly made the West Indies attack look ordinary despite a green-tinged wicket and cloud cover for much of the day.
The cloud cleared at tea, when New Zealand were 194-3, and in the bright sunshine of the final session Taylor and McCullum produced a ruthless display of power batting to press home their advantage.
New Zealand's senior batsmen added a further 173 runs in the final session, heaping more misery on the tired West Indies attack,ending the day with an unbeaten partnership worth 182.
Captain McCullum, who made no secret of his wish to bowl first, was at his aggressive best, bringing up the 300 with a mighty six when he pulled Shannon Gabriel over square leg.
The innings was a personal boost for McCullum, who has been suffering from a severe back injury that requires him to use painkillers to take the field.
It was his seventh Test century and ended a slump that has affected his game since he notched a personal best of 225 against India three years ago.
Taylor, who brought up his ninth century, had one close encounter when on two, rapped on the gloves trying to fend off a Tino Best delivery, with the ball ballooning just over the outstreched arms of second and third slips.
From there he was more circumspect and his 103 came off 157 deliveries, including 13 fours. McCullum has hit 14 fours and three sixes.
Rutherford and Fulton produced a 95-run opening stand for New Zealand that ended just before lunch when Rutherford was caught one-handed on the boundary by a leaping Narsingh Deonarine off the bowling of Shane Shillingford.
It was an aggressive innings by Rutherford, who had dispatched Shillingford for a six and four in the bowler's previous over.
Fulton was more sedate initially, but scored three fours in quick succession to reach his half-century.
But when he reached 61, a lapse of concentration saw him jab at a Darren Sammy delivery and Kirk Edwards took a regulation catch at second slip.
Aaron Redmond, back in the side after a five-year absence, was the one other wicket to fall. He reached 20 before an attempt to turn Best down the leg side turned into a leading edge claimed by Marlon Samuels in the gully.
Shillingford, allowed to play while waiting for the result of tests on the legality of his bowling action after he was reported by the International Cricket Council, finished the day with figures of one for 88 off 28 overs.
Sammy returned figures of 1-68 and Best, who just failed to reach a caught-and-bowled chance off McCullum late in the day, took 1-87.

Chanderpaul joins 11,000 club

Shivnarine Chander-paul became the seventh player to pass 11,000 runs in Test cricket as West Indies face an uphill struggle to avoid defeat against New Zealand on day three of their first Test match at the University Oval yesterday.
The veteran 39-year-old left-hander hit the top score of 76 to join the esteemed company of the recently retired Sachin Tendulkar of India, Ricky Ponting of Australia, Rahul Dravid of India, South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis, former teammate Brian Lara, and Australian legend Allan Border.
However, his half century was the highlight of a West Indies first innings batting collapse in which they were dismissed for 213 after resuming from an overnight 67 for two.
Forced to follow on, the Caribbean side batted with more purpose in their second innings to reach 168 for two at stumps.
Trent Boult struck early when he had Kieran Powell caught at second slip by Tim Southee to leave the West Indies 18 for one.
But Kirk Edwards and Darren Bravo steadied the innings, putting on 117 for the second wicket before the leg spin of Ish Sodhi trapped Edwards in front after a well-crafted 59.
At stumps, Bravo, who had taken the attack to the Black Caps, was not out 72, with Marlon Samuels on 17.

DUNEDIN, New Zealand (CMC) - Off-spinner Shane Shillingford led a West Indies fightback in the opening Test against New Zealand which ended in a draw on Saturday. Forecast rain arrived in Dunedin just before lunch on the fifth day leaving New Zealand stranded at 79 for 4, 33 runs short of victory. The match was abandoned shortly after 6:00 pm following a desperate attempt to mop up and to give New Zealand a chance for victory. 1/1 Shillingford took all four wickets to stall New Zealand’s hopes of a first win in 10 Test matches. He finished with four for 26 off 15 tight and penetrative overs. Earlier, the West Indies batted through the morning session to reach 507 all out. Darren Bravo top scored with 218. Needing just 112 for victory, New Zealand made a shaky start to their second innings. Peter Fulton was caught behind for three and Aaron Redmond was caught at leg slip for seven. Hamish Rutherford (20) was caught slogging at long on for the second time in the match and Brendon McCullum miscued a sweep shot to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin for nine. When the rain arrived Ross Taylor was 16 not out and the all-rounder Corey Anderson was unbeaten on 20. Taylor was declared man of the match after lodging his highest score in Test cricket of 217 not out in New Zealand's first innings. "We were still very confident that Ross and Corey would put together a partnership to win and we had some very good batters to come as well," said McCullum. "We can still improve, but overall I thought it was a pretty good Test by us." WI pay ton for dropped catch Published: Thursday | December 12, 2013 0 Comments WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP): New Zealand's Ross Taylor made the most of a second chance given to him by the West Indies and scored a century, which guided the hosts to 307-6 at stumps yesterday on the first day of the second Test. Taylor was dropped before he had scored, with Kirk Edwards putting down the chance at third slip. The tourists paid heavily for that mistake. Had the chance been taken, New Zealand would have been in trouble at 26-3, but Taylor went on to make 129 and put the hosts on top after being sent in to bat. Taylor reached his 10th Test century without offering another chance to the fielding side, although he was dropped again when on 124. Taylor has now amassed 362 runs in his first three innings of this three-Test series while losing his wicket only once, and in the process has gone up to No. 7 in the world's batting rankings, increased his average by more than three runs and passed 4,000 Test runs. "I got congratulated by Shivnarine Chanderpaul when I got to 100," Taylor said. "I said 'that was lucky' and he said you always need luck in this game and don't take a Test hundred for granted. "I never get too high or too low, just get in there and play each ball on its merit, and I did that until I got to about 110 and a bit of fatigue set in." He set about recovering the New Zealand innings, which was in trouble at 24-2, forming partnerships of 88 with Kane Williamson (45) for the third wicket, 77 with Brendon McCullum (37) for the fourth and 68 with Corey Anderson (38) for the fifth. WELLINGTON, New Zealand (CMC) -- West Indies plummeted, in typical dramatic fashion, to a humiliating innings and 73 runs defeat against New Zealand on the third day of the second test at Basin Reserve here on Friday. Seamer Trent Boult delivered career-best figures of 10 for 80 to lead the demolition as West Indies succumbed inside three days to gift New Zealand their first Test victory in more than a year. 1/1 The 24-year-old Boult who took six for 40, including five wickets in 15 balls, to help bowl the West Indies out for 193 in the first innings also took four for 40 in their second innings of 175 to put the hosts 1-0 up in the three-match series. Resuming from their overnight total of 158 for four, in reply to New Zealand’s 441, the Windies were bowled out about an hour after the rescheduled start and were forced to follow on for the second straight Test. The Caribbean side appeared to be setting the stage for another gallant fightback after a solid start from openers Kirk Edwards and Kieran Powell which produced 74 runs. But Bolt accounted for nine of the 16 wickets on the third day as West Indian batsmen were unable to adjust to his swing bowling aided by favourable overhead and ground conditions which allowed him to grab six for 40 from 15 overs in the first innings and four for 40 from 12.5 overs in the second innings. Powell was bowled off the inside edge by Tim Southee for the top score of 36 before left-arm fast-medium bowler Neil Wagner had Darren Bravo caught behind for a second-ball duck, leaving West Indies 75 for two. Darren Sammy was then trapped in front by Boult for a duck, giving the West Indian captain a pair for the match, before Shane Shillingford was caught by Ross Taylor at first slip for one off Neil Wagner. Only Tino Best with a typical tail-ender’s flourish reached 20 before Boult brought the curtain down when he bowled Gabriel for a second-ball duck, leaving Shivnarine Chanderpaul not out on 31. The victory was the first for New Zealand since Brendon McCullum took over as captain late last year. The defeat meant that West Indies now trail 0-1 in the three-match series, following a draw in the first Test which ended last Saturday at University Oval in Dunedin. Bravo was speaking to reporters after West Indies scored their first win of their tour of New Zealand, beating the home side by two wickets in the first game of the ODI series on Thursday. Bravo, who was not selected for the three-Test series which the regional side lost two-nil, said he stressed the importance of unity in the lead-up to the first ODI fixture. "Before we played the game, I really stressed on unity as the team was lacking in that lately, and hence the reason why we have been playing so poorly," said Bravo. "I made a concerted effort to bring everyone together and get everyone involved." West Indies hardly impressed in the three-match Test series that preceded the one-days, and lost the advantage the few times they held it. Before that, they struggled in the two-match Test series in India, though they managed to win one of the three ODIs in a close, high-scoring game. On Christmas morning, a movie depicting the struggles of the iconic Nelson Mandela motivated a battered team. "We sat down yesterday morning, Christmas morning, and watched Invictus, the movie with Morgan Freeman acting as Nelson Mandela. That inspired us," said the ODI skipper. "It showed the importance of sport. We are fortunate to represent our nation. We are the few players to do that. It hurts our fans when we don't win cricket games, and not only losing, but the way we lose at times." Record-setting Anderson blasts WI for massive NZ win

QUEENSTOWN, New Zealand (CMC):
New Zealand outclassed West Indies by 159 runs to win a lopsided and rain-shortened third one-day international (ODI), powered by the fastest international century from Corey Anderson at the Queenstown Events Centre yesterday.
Anderson reached his 100 in a one-day match against West Indies in Queenstown from 36 balls, breaking the record of 37 set by Pakistan's Shahid Afridi in 1996, as New Zealand reached 283 for four from 21 overs.
In reply, West Indies, who chose to field after winning the toss, limped to 124 for five as New Zealand tied the series one game each with two matches remaining.
Anderson finished with 131 from 47 balls, with his ton including 14 sixes and six fours.
Attacked at nightclub
He was supported by Jesse Ryder, whose 104 was itself the sixth fastest ton in ODIs in only his second match since being left in an induced coma after being attacked outside a nightclub last March.
The pair, who put on 191 for the fourth wicket, came together at 84 for three in the seventh over.
The pick of the West Indian bowling was Jason Holder, with two for 48 from four overs.
Sunil Narine and Ravi Rampaul bore the brunt of Anderson's carnage, conceding four sixes in an over each, with Rampaul's three overs costing 64 runs.
The Caribbean side stumbled to 54 for four by the 11th over and never recovered from the top-order collapse.
Captain Dwayne Bravo was undefeated on 56, with three fours and three sixes, while Narsingh Deonarine scored 29.

NELSON, New Zealand (CMC) – New Zealand beat West Indies by 58 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method to win the fourth One Day International (ODI) here at Saxton Oval and take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Rain shortened play during the West Indies’ reply to New Zealand’s 285 for six off their 50 overs. West Indies were 134 for five in the 34th over when play was officially called off. 1/1 West Indies struggled from the start, losing both openers – Chadwick Walton (0) and Johnson Charles (0). Kirk Edwards and Lendl Simmons stabilised the innings before Edwards was run out by Brendon McCullum for 24 and Simmons was caught on the boundary for 43 off 48 balls. When the rain came, Dwayne Bravo (43) and Denesh Ramdin (17) were at the wickets but still short of the run equation. Earlier, opener Martin Guptill set the stage for New Zealand with a knock of 81. Ross Taylor (49), and 47 each from Jesse Ryder and Kane Williamson ensured a challenging target for the West Indies. Bravo finished with two for 35 and a wicket each for Sunil Narine, Jason Holder and Tino Best. Best was the most expensive of the bowlers, conceding 22 runs off his final over to end with one for 70 off nine overs. West Indies were down to 12 fit players after pacer Ravi Rampaul suffered an injured finger while batting the nets on Friday. This followed injuries to Marlon Samuels and Darren Sammy and the withdrawal of Darren Bravo due to personal reasons. The fifth and final ODI will be played in Hamilton on Wednesday (Tuesday afternoon Caribbean time). The two teams will also contest two Twenty20 matches. HAMILTON, New Zealand (AFP) — The West Indies racked up their highest-ever limited overs total to crush New Zealand by 203 runs in the fifth One-Day International yesterday, and draw the series 2-2. Kirk Edwards and Dwayne Bravo both notched centuries as the West Indies flayed New Zealand's attack to reach 363 for four, before Nikita Miller dominated with the ball to skittle the Black Caps for 160. The mammoth total was the highest ever posted by the West Indies in a 50-over match, surpassing the previous mark of 360 set against Sri Lanka in 1987. Edwards and Dwayne Bravo came together at 143-3 and put on 211 runs, with Edwards finishing unbeaten on 123, his maiden ODI century. Skipper Bravo was dismissed shortly before the end of the innings for 106. Opener Kieran Powell had launched a blistering assault at the start of the innings, smashing 73 runs off just 44 balls with 12 fours and two sixes. He plundered 18 off a single Mitchell McClenaghan over, with one lucky spectator winning NZ$100,000 (US$83,000) from a beer sponsor by catching one of his sixes one-handed. New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum brought on his brother Nathan to try to stem the runs and the tactic paid off almost immediately when Powell was out lbw for 73, trying to sweep. Fellow opener Johnson Charles was run out for 31 when Nathan McCullum sent the stumps flying with a direct hit as the batsman attempted a quick single and Lendl Simmons followed soon after, caught by Kane Williamson. Bravo came to the crease and steadied the innings with Edwards, who smashed a six to notch his half-century. The West Indies bludgeoned 117 off the last 10 overs, with Bravo out trying to smash Williamson out of the ground. New Zealand made a disastrous start, slumping to 65 for five after just 15 overs through a combination of rash shots and a much-improved West Indian attack. The Black Caps openers went cheaply, with Martin Guptill out lbw for six and dangerman Jesse Ryder (17) scooping the ball skyward going for a slog. Bravo...expensive 15th over WELLINGTON, New Zealand (CMC) -- Poor fielding and a costly over from skipper Dwayne Bravo disrupted West Indies’ momentum and helped New Zealand to a four-wicket win in the second and final T20 match at Westpac Stadium, Wellington in New Zealand on Wednesday. West Indies dropped a number of catches in the field while an expensive 15th over by Bravo yielded 17 runs as New Zealand completed a successful chase after the visitors, who won the toss and elected to bat first, scored 159 for five. New Zealand have sealed the series two-nil after also winning the opener on Saturday. The West Indies appeared to have lost their way when they were reduced to 67-4 in the 11th over before Denesh Ramdin and Andre Russell breathed life into their innings. Opener Lendl Simmons was off to an encouraging start hitting five fours to reach 29 before he was caught. Ramdin and Russell (10 not out) put on 70 for the fifth wicket which began when Andre Fletcher, who scored 40, opted to sacrifice himself after he and Ramdin ended up at the same end in a running mix up. Fletcher, who top scored in the first T20 on Saturday, smashed three fours and one six. Ramdin carried on through to the end to be unbeaten on 55 off 31 balls in an innings which included three sixes and three fours. Chasing the 160 target, New Zealand were struggling at 79-5 before a 68-run partnership between Ross Taylor and Luke Ronchi turned the innings around. Taylor played the anchor role with 39 off 41 balls while Ronchi belted an unbeaten 51 off 28 deliveries in an innings that included four fours and two sixes. The pair were particularly harsh on Bravo in the 15th over when they took 17 runs to reduce the target from 54 off 36 balls to a more manageable 37 off 30. They also took 15 off the 17th over by Jason Holder. Jesse Ryder was dropped twice as he raced to a quick 23 in nine balls, and Brendon McCullum received a life on his way to 17. Two chances were missed to remove man of the match Ronchi on the first ball he faced. Andre Russell dropped a caught and bowled opportunity and when Ronchi scampered through for a quick single Tino Best was astray with his run out throw at the stumps.

MELBOURNE, Australia (CMC) —West Indies delivered a better all-round batting display but were overpowered by Australia inside four days to suffer a 177-run defeat in the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here yesterday. Captain Jason Holder and Denesh Ramdin scored powerful half-centuries to lead a gutsy fightback but the Aussies prevailed to secure the series two-nil and retain the Frank Worrell Trophy. All seven front line batsmen got starts as Windies showed determination before they were bowled out for 282 in their second innings after Steven Smith’s overnight declaration on 179 for three. Ramdin and Holder spearheaded the resistance by adding 100 runs for the sixth wicket but tackling a 460-run deficit was always going to be a tall order.
