Jamaica College (JC) notched their fifth consecutive win when they tagged Bridgeport High 3-1 in a top-of-the-table Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup group E football match at JC's Old Hope Road playing field yesterday.

The winners moved to 15 points with their perfect record at the half-way stage in the preliminary round. Bridgeport remained in second spot on 10 points.

JC netted courtesy of goals by Rafique Bryan in the 10th minute, Malique Foster (37th) and substitute Stefan Logan (74th), while Rayon Swire netted for Bridgeport in the 65th minute.

The JC team went on the attack early and could have taken the lead, but captain Junior Flemming shot wide of the target from close range. However, Flemming received a good pass on the left flank and provided a cross that Bryan neatly finished past Bridgeport goalkeeper Zachry Whitter.

It was 2-0 when Foster headed home past Whitter.

Bridgeport picked up the tempo with some good displays by captain Shaquille Folkes, Clayon Pusey and Swire. Both teams went close to scoring, but the half ended 2-0.

In the second half, Bridgeport fought back and scored when Swire blasted past JC's custodian, Courtney Dowdie.

However, JC sealed the deal when Logan, who came off the bench, netted from close range.

"Tactically, we got it right. The boys know how to handle pressure as they have done well in their schoolwork," JC's coach, Miguel Coley, said at game's end.

"I am not pleased with some aspects of the game, but I am not worried about giving up a goal as it came from a set piece. We did not give them too many looks at goal," Coley noted.

Meanwhile, Bridgeport's coach, Tyrone Roberts, said his team that was losing for the first time this season gave a poor performance.

"Definitely, JC played better in midfield. It was a poor performance by the team. We came to play, but indiscipline crept in and we gave up three goals. We will come again," Roberts said.

St George's too good for C'down

Defending champions, St George's College, recorded a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Camperdown in their rescheduled Group 'D' encounter in the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup competition at the Bellevue field yesterday.

National Under-17 representative and captain, Ryan Miller (15th), and Oshane Boothe, a national Under-20 player (87th), were the goalscorers for the Neville 'Bertis' Bell-coached St George's. Romario Ward scored the consolation goal for Camperdown in the 90th minute.

The victory moved the 'Light Blues' to 17 points, three clear of Camperdown and Charlie Smith, who are both locked on 14. They are followed by fourth-place Vauxhall (six), Oberlin (five), and Donald Quarrie (one).

In the group's other games, Charlie Smith beat Oberlin 4-2 and Vauxhall and Donald Quarrie played to a 0-0 draw.

At the Bellevue field, St George's dominated possession in the early exchanges, but they missed a number of clear-cut opportunities.

The 'Light Blues' were finally rewarded for their dominance when they were awarded a penalty as striker Tevin Beadle was brought down inside the 18-yard box by Oneil Anderson. Miller then stepped up to convert his seventh goal of the season from the spot.

Camperdown came close to scoring the equaliser during the first period, but faulty shooting from their attackers let them down. Camperdown's captain, Hugh Evans, along with Kevin Clark and Rohan Scott, were all guilty of glaring misses for their team.

COSTLY MISTAKES

The Christopher Bender-coached Camper-down came out looking the better team in the second period as they dominated the ball possession, but tame shooting from the strikers led to their downfall. The east Kingston-based school was made to pay for their early misses when Boothe doubled St George's lead three minutes from time.

Ward gave Camperdown a glimmer of hope when he scored for his team in the 90th minute.

St George's assistant coach, Marcel Gayle, was happy for the win.

"Congrats to the guys because I think they played well," Gayle said.

Stanford Patrick, assistant coach of Camperdown, was disappointed with his team's efforts.

"I think we didn't put down the ball and play the type of football that we know how to play," said Patrick.

UPDATE

Charlie blank St George's 3-0

Published: Sunday | October 6, 2013 Comments 0

Robert Bailey, Gleaner Writer

Charlie Smith High tuned in a scintillating first half display yesterday to thrash defending champions St George's College 3-0 in Group D of their Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup football competition at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Shamar Pryce (10th), Ryan Smith (40th) and Bebeto McDonald (41st) were on target for Charlie Smith.

However, the Georgians who were suffering their first defeat of the season, remain atop the group ahead of Camperdown and Charlie Smith by virtue of a superior goal difference, as all three teams are locked on 17 points each.

St George's have scored 26 goals while conceding 10, compared to second place Camperdown, who have netted 23 goals and conceded eight while Charlie Smith have scored 23 goals while conceding nine.

They are followed by Oberlin and Vauxhall who are locked on six points each. Donald Quarrie are at the bottom with two points. In the group's other games yesterday, Camperdown whipped Vauxhall 5-0 and Donald Quarrie and Oberlin played to a 0-0 draw.

Jerome Waite, coach of Charlie Smith, was delighted with his team's performance. "Charlie Smith team defended stoutly and it resulted in three good goals," said Waite.

CONFIDENCE

Charlie Smith began the match confidently and were rewarded when Pryce's curling 30-yards free-kick went through the hands of St George's goalkeeper Cardell Irving and into the back of the net.

The St George's players seems shell-shocked after conceding the early goal and Charlie Smith went on to dominate the first half. Smith doubled Charlie Smith's lead in the 40th minute when he control the ball on chest in 18-yards box, then turned away from his marker before firing home from close range.

McDonald netted his team's third goal a minute later, when he outran two St George's defenders before calmly slotting the ball home past Irving and into the back of the net.

St George's dominated the second half but they were kept at bay by a well-organised Charlie Smith defence. Charlie Smith's custodian Leon Taylor was also excellent for his team as he was called upon to make a number of outstanding saves from the St George's attackers.

Marcel Gayle, assistant coach of St George's, was disappointed with his team's efforts.

"I thought it was a good game, but I think that Charlie Smith came out in the first half and capitalised on their opportunities," said Gayle. "I think that we never got it right and so it is just one of those bad days for us."

Excelsior drub Selassie 12-0

Published: Sunday | October 13, 2013 0 Comments

Robert Bailey, Sunday Gleaner Writer

Former champions Excelsior High thrashed Haile Selassie 12-0 in Group B yesterday to book their spot in this year's Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Walker Cup Knockout competition. The match was played at the Courtney Walsh Oval.

The Leebert Halliman-coached Excelsior were led to victory courtesy of a hat-trick from Colorado Murray, in the 24th, 31st and 39th minutes. Murray received good support from Kareem Banton, Romaine Hosang and substitute Terrick James, who netted two goals each.

Banton scored in the 28th and 63rd, Hosang in the 85th and 87th while James notched his double in the 48th and 75th minutes. Tevin Jackson (seventh), Samuel Halliman (37th), Terrick Anderson (60th) were the other goalscorers for Excelsior.

Excelsior finished atop the group with 25 points ahead of Norman Manley with 23. They are followed St Jago (19), Cumberland (10), Waterford (five) and Haile Selassie (four). In the group's other games, Norman Manley defeated Waterford 4-1 and St Jago whipped Cumberland 6-1.

Halliman said despite his team's huge victory, he was not impressed with their overall performance.

"I didn't think it was a good game from us because we were playing against a very weak team and that is why we were able to score so many goals today. I think we were disorganised and if we were playing a much better team, we wouldn't have scored many goals," the Excelsior coach said.

Meanwhile, Spanish Town also sealed their spot in the Walker Cup competition with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kingston College (KC) in Group F. In the group's other game, Greater Portmore blanked Penwood 5-0.

Daniel Francis scored the lone goal for the Anthony Thompson-coached Spanish Town in the sixth minute. The victory moved Spanish Town to 19 points, six ahead of KC (13), who are awaiting a ruling from ISSA after their match against Eltham was called off after the latter failed to show.

"I am feeling really good because we are a fighting team," said Thompson. "We played four games in eight days and my team really stuck to the task and so I must give my players a lot of credit for that."

KC, ‘Charlie’ bow to JC, Hydel

SUBSTITUTE Rohnako Allen scored a 90th-minute goal to hand Hydel High joint pole position in Group H of the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup competition following their 1-0 defeat of 10-man Charlie Smith High at the Constant Spring field, yesterday. In the other Group H second-round match, Jamaica College, through Junior Flemmings' headed strike, also defeated Kingston College 1-0 in the feature match at the venue. In the early kick-off, Hydel's coach Geoffrey Maxwell said a more positive approach in the second half reaped dividends.

“The aim was to play defensive and counter-attacked against Charlie Smith, because they have players who can damage us. It didn't work the way we hoped, so in the second half we played more offensively and looked for a win, and it came out okay,” Maxwell said. His opposite number, Jerome Waite, said “inexperience” undermined his Charlie Smith team after they failed to put away “numerous chances”.

While Hydel, last season's losing finalists, employed counter-attacking tactics in the opening half, the former champions Charlie Smith held the upper hand in ball possession. Waite's team also created the better openings and even hit the woodwork moments before the break.

The pace picked up in the second half as Hydel became more ambitious, but at the opposite end, substitute Chevaun Crooks almost stole the lead for Charlie Smith, who are semifinalists in the Walker Cup Knockout. However, after a mazy dribble into the 18-yard-box midway the half, he booted into the side netting.

At the other end, Allen also could have given Hydel the lead, however he blasted onto the crossbar after pouncing on a failed clearance inside the six-yard box with approximately five minutes remaining. A minute later 'Charlie' went down to 10 players when Chevaughn Edwards was red-carded for striking an opponent. On the stroke of the 90th minute, Allen made amends for the earlier miss with a calm left-footed finish beneath Charlie Smith's custodian Leon Taylor. Jamaica College, courtesy of Flemmings’ second-half header, pulled off a deserved 1-0 victory over prominent rivals Kingston College.

Flemmings goal came in the 60th minute The three points put Jamaica College level with Hydel High. After watching his team squander several chances in a 0-2 Walker Cup defeat to Excelsior High on Tuesday, coach Miguel Coley must have been a relieved man when Flemmings finally got on the scoresheet following another day filled with a series of missed opportunities. “It was a game of gutsy because of the rivalry between KC and JC. We are still missing chances, but we are working on it, and I'm pleased with the win,” Coley said.

Kingston College's coach Donavan Hayles said he was “disappointed with the result”, but “pleased with the players and the effort” they gave in the loss. In the feature match, the two sets of drum-beating supporters helped to heighten the atmosphere, but unfortunately for the football purists, the first-half play from both teams lacked the bubbly vibe of the pounding music in the stands. Kingston College's Kashane Jones made his team's intent clear early in the game when he turned and shot from the edge of the box. But JC's goalkeeper Sherrick Davis, starting ahead of Courtney Dowdie, who had a poor showing in the Walker Cup loss, parried competently over the crossbar. Jamaica College's Ramone Howell headed over the bar from a corner later in the half before Flemmings, the national youth player, hit the near upright from close range after being put through on goal.

JC, who had two efforts disallowed for offside infractions, had another chance just before the hour mark, but Flemmings' shot was deflected wide for a corner kick by 'keeper Akim Larmond.

From the resulting corner taken by Kevin Blackwood, the industrious Flemmings nodded downward into the net to seal the win. The competition continues today with a pair of games in Group I at the Spanish Town Prison Oval. At 1:00 pm, Excelsior High battle Denham Town High, while at 3:00 pm Innswood meet Ascot High.

Wolmer's, Bridgeport score wins

WOLMER'S Boys' clipped Group J rivals Norman Manley High 1-0 to get off to a winning start in the second round of the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup competition at the Constant Spring field yesterday.

Jaheel Hyde got the goal in the third minute of the match.

Another Group J team, Bridgeport High, also moved to three points after a comprehensive 4-2 win over Holy Trinity High in the second match at the venue.

Earlier, spectators were barely settled in when Hyde, the outstanding national youth sprint hurdler, booted in a left-footed half volley from close range.

Despite scoring that early, Wolmer's never hit full stride, which left head coach Ludlow Bernard lamenting that it was "not one of our best games" of the season.

Norman Manley did not appear overwhelmed by conceding early and battled gamely in the first half. The Maxfield Avenue-based school was spurred by several individual efforts in central and wide positions, but some promising moves ended prematurely in the attacking third.

Norman Manley's coach Alrick Clarke said that "indiscipline" in the approach to training meant that their "passing game" suffered against their Heroes' Circle-based opponents.

Wolmer's were more composed on the ball and opened up a few opportunities but their attackers, in particular Jordan James, lacked the finishing touch.

The second half was a more even contest as Norman Manley fought gallantly, but without the requisite precision, to find the equaliser. For their part, Wolmer's appeared flat and struggled to push home the advantage.

In the second game, Bridgeport High, despite having a player short for more than half the game, outlasted Holy Trinity High in an entertaining 4-2 win.

Bridgeport's Rayon Swire scored in the 33rd and 48th minutes, in between strikes from teammates Rojay Smith (16th) and Timothy Kamaka (77th).

Nicholas Hamilton also hit a double for Holy Trinity, scoring in the 27th and 40th minutes of an open encounter.

Both teams showed their attacking intent in the early exchanges, but it was the Bridgeport outfit which went ahead when Dwayne Lettman crossed from the right side for Smith to sweetly head home.

Hamilton, who was a live wire throughout the afternoon, pulled Holy Trinity level three minutes short of the half-hour mark with a side-footed volley.

Swire, whose cousin died under tragic circumstances in Portmore on Saturday, put Bridgeport back in front when he ran onto a ball over the top of the defence and slid his effort beneath the advancing Holy Trinity goalkeeper Sean-Paul Daley and into the net.

He celebrated by removing his jersey and revealing a T-shirt paying homage to his fallen relative and was handed a mandatory yellow card.

In the 39th minute Bridgeport went down to 10 players when Keldino Davis was shown a straight red card for deliberately handling Holy Trinity player Shamar Stephenson's goal-bound effort inside the 18-yard box. To add salt to the wound, the resultant penalty kick was scored by Hamilton, as the teams entered the half-time break at 2-2.

Bridgeport surprised many by taking a 3-2 lead a mere three minutes into the second period when Swire scored on a simple tap-in following a deflected effort that came his way.

Holy Trinity's Hamilton missed out on a triple and his team's equaliser when he hit the crossbar with a lob on the hour mark.

But Bridgeport, showing superb fitness and good tactical discipline, hardly showed signs of being a player short. They made the game safe 13 minutes before the close when the determined Kamaka, a substitute, outran the Trinity defence to calmly slot home.

Meanwhile, today's matches in the Manning Cup competition will be played in Group K at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.

In the curtain-raiser at 1:00 pm, title-holders St George's College meet Calabar High, while at 3:00 pm, Spanish Town High welcome Camperdown High.

George's whip Calabar 8-1

Published: Wednesday | October 30, 2013 0 Comments

Marc Stamp, Gleaner Writer

St George's College, behind double strikes from four players, demolished Calabar High 8-1 in Group K of the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup football competition at the Spanish Town Prison Oval in St Catherine yesterday.

The defending champions, courtesy of goals from captain Ryan Miller (13th and 17th), Oshane Boothe (21st and 70th), Cardel Benbow (37th and 90th) and Shevon Stewart (11th and 90+) sounded a stern warning to all opponents. Omar Walcott netted for Calabar in the 86th minute.

It was a truly one-sided affair in the first match of the double-header at the venue as Calabar failed to contain the slick passing and good off-the-ball movement from the 'Light Blues'.

St George's assistant coach Marcel 'Fuzzy' Gayle was a bit surprised by the huge margin of victory over the Red Hills Road-based institution.

TESTIMONY

"Well, basically, I am surprised at the outcome, but today is a testimony of what would have happened if we had scored our many chances in earlier games," Gayle told The Gleaner yesterday.

"Credit to the guys, as they played well. We got a bit complacent and let in a goal. However, we came for three points and achieved that. We are now looking towards our next fixture against Camperdown on Saturday," Gayle added.

Meanwhile, Marvin Tate, coach of Calabar, was shocked by the result and overall performance of his team.

"I don't know what to say. We were not expecting anything like this. We played Premier League team Waterhouse and lost 6-3 in a practice game last week and I thought the team played well. I just don't know what really happened today," an obviously disappointed Tate said.

In the day's second game, Camperdown tagged Spanish Town High 3-0, courtesy of a brace by Rohan Scott in the 14th and 70th minutes and another goal by Tevin Shaw.

Camperdown could have won by a much wider margin as Spanish Town, who had their coach, Anthony Thompson, removed from the bench after going 2-0 down, offered little resistance.

In the second half, their inspirational captain Nathaniel Leslie, a former national Under-17 player, moved from midfield to central defence in order to curtail the frequent attacks from Camperdown.

"Winning games bring confidence, but we were not efficient enough in front of goal. We have the three points, and that was important," Camperdown's coach, Christopher Bender, said.

"We will be meeting the defending champions for the third time this season in our next game and it will be another good game," Bender pointed out.

George's close to last four

Published: Sunday | November 3, 2013 0 Comments

Robert Bailey, Sunday Gleaner Writer

Defending champions St George's College moved closer to securing their spot in the semi-finals of this year's Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup competition, with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Camperdown in Group K yesterday.

In the opening game of the double header which was played at the Constant Spring Sports Complex, the Georgians were led to victory courtesy of an eight-minute strike from national Under-20 representative Oshane Boothe.

The victory moved St George's to six points, ahead of Camperdown and Calabar, who are both locked on three points each. Spanish Town are at the bottom of the group on zero. In the second encounter yesterday, Calabar beat Spanish Town 2-0.

The Neville Bell-coached St George's only need a draw against Spanish Town in their final group game on Tuesday to advance into the semi-finals. Despite his team's victory, Bell said he was not pleased with their overall performance.

"I think this is one of our worse games all season, but thank God, we got the victory," said Bell. "If I were the Camperdown coach, I would be very disappointed. I thought Camperdown had a wonderful game because they really played well."

He added: "I think that when you play against a team that plays well and you don't lose the game, then that said a lot about our character."

The 'Light Blues' stunned Camperdown's supporters early in the game when Boothe arrived at the near post to nod home a well-measured cross from his captain Ryan Miller, past goalkeeper Leon Lee. However, Camperdown went on to dominate the remainder of the first half, but they failed to convert a number of clear-cut chances.

Camperdown's forward Akeem Bradford went close to getting the equaliser in the 25th minute, but his powerful right-footed shot from 12-yards hit the crossbar.

A few minutes later, Camperdown's Rohan Scott received a defence-splitting pass from his captain Hugh Evans inside the 18-yards box but with the St George's custodian Cordell Irving at his mercy, he sent his weak shot wide of the target.

Glancing header

Evans also came close to giving Camperdown the equaliser on the stroke of half-time, but his glancing header from eight-yards struck the crossbar.

Camperdown also dominated the second half, however, they were again let down by poor finishing from their attackers. Substitutes André McCatty and Tajea Brown along with Scott and Bradford were all guilty of missing clear-cut chances for Camperdown.

"We got the tactics right up to the last third and we played well, but we just never got the goals," said Christopher Bender, coach of Camperdown.

Bender added: "I am very disappointed that we never got the win, but I am not disappointed with the team's play because I can't fault them for their efforts as it was 100 per cent."

JC beat Charlie Smith in thriller

Published: Tuesday | November 5, 2013 0 Comments

Jamaica College turned in a scintillating second-half performance to register a thrilling 4-2 come-from-behind victory over Charlie Smith High in their feature Group H encounter in the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup game at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

JC, who produced one of their best performances of the season, came from 2-0 down in the second period to secure victory. The Miguel Coley-coached JC were led to victory courtesy of a double from former national Under-17 captain Junior Flemming in the 59th and 84th minutes.

Kevin Blackwood (61st) and substitute Sheldon McKay (88th) were the other scorers for the winners. Kimani Arbournie (15th) and Bebeto McDonald (38th) were the scorers for Charlie Smith, who ended the game with 10 men after Shaquille Dyer was dismissed in the 80th minute after receiving a second caution.

In the opening game of the double-header, last year's beaten finalists Hydel recorded a hard-fought 2-1 win over Kingston College (KC). Stephen Bennett (17th) and Kurt Thomas (45th) netted the goals for Hydel. Allan Morgan scored for KC in the 33rd minute.

Geoffrey Maxwell, head coach of Hydel, praised his team for a disciplined performance.

"So far, we have worked hard as a young team, and stuck to the plan today," Maxwell said. "We deserved to win the game, and are confident moving forward. It would be fantastic to qualify for the semi-finals. It is a young team and they showed a lot of fight and have done well."

JC and Hydel are locked atop the group with six points and will meet on Friday to decide the semi-final qualifiers from the group. JC need only a draw to advance, as they are ahead of Hydel with a plus-three goal difference. Charlie Smith and KC are on zero and cannot advance to the semi-finals.

"We started out very flat, and so in the second half we wanted to get their confidence up, and we did that and we scored some goals," said JC's coach, Coley.

He added: "I think this is one of our best performances this season in terms of how we fought."

VERY DISAPPOINTED

Jerome Waite, coach of Charlie Smith, was very disappointed with his team's second-half performance and blamed his usually competent goalkeeper for allowing in two soft goals.

Charlie Smith dominated the early exchanges and were rewarded when Arbournie pounced on a loose ball inside the 18-yard area to slam past custodian Courtney Dowdie. Charlie Smith doubled their advantage when the speedy and skilful McDonald beat two defenders inside the six-yard box to calmly slot home past Dowdie.

However, JC came out firing on all cylinders in the second period. They pulled a goal back when Flemming headed home from close range past Charlie Smith goalkeeper Leon Taylor. Blackwood then netted the equaliser for JC two minutes later, with a powerful header past Taylor. With Charlie Smith reduced to 10 men, JC took full advantage as Flemming netted their third before McKay sealed victory two minutes from the final whistle.

George's bag semis berth

Published: Friday | November 8, 2013 0 Comments

Robert Bailey, Gleaner Writer

Defending champions St George's College marched into this year's semi-finals of the Inter-Secondary Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup competition, with an impressive 5-1 victory over 10-man Spanish Town High at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

National Under-20 representative Cardel Benbow led the way for St George's with a double in the 35th and 82nd minutes. The other scorers for St George's were former national Under-17 player Martin Davis (6th), Shevon Stewart (29th) and captain Ryan Miller (85th). Kemar Staple scored the consolation goal for Spanish Town in the 65th minute. Lloyd Duhaney was ejected after receiving two cautions.

St George's ended their second round atop Group K with maximum nine points ahead of Camperdown (six), Calabar three and Spanish Town zero.

In the opening game of the double-header, Camperdown whipped Calabar 4-0. Camperdown were led to victory by Rohan Scott who slammed home a hat-trick in the 17th, 37th and 85th minutes. Captain Hugh Evan scored Camperdown's fourth goal in the 90th minute.

St George's coach Neville 'Bertis' Bell was happy to be in the semi-finals but felt his team performed below their best.

"I don't think it was one of our better performances, but it was a tough game for us to play," Bell said.

He added: "I thought we came into the game with a little arrogance as we thought we had made it to the semi-finals and I don't think that we were as smooth as we could be, but then we scored five goals."

Anthony Thompson, coach of Spanish Town, praised his team for their performance, despite the heavy loss. "We played well, although it's a make-shift team. I used some young players to prepare them for next year," Thompson said.

doubled the lead

Davis gave the champions a dream start when he dribbled past three Spanish Town defenders before calmly slotting the ball home past the advancing Sean Paul Desouza in goal. Stewart doubled the lead when he fired home from inside the 18-yard box.

Benbow made it 3-0 before half time when he arrived at the near post to tap home a cross from Davis.

Playing in front of their home crowd, Spanish Town came out with a lot more purpose in the second half and they were given a glimmer of hope when Staple scored to reduce the deficit.

However, Benbow added his second and captain Miller scored a penalty late in the game to wrap up the victory for the Georgians.

The competition continues today with a double-header in Group H at the Constant Spring Sports Complex. Jamaica College and Hydel meet in the top-of-the-table clash to determine the group winners and semi-finalists.

JC cruise into semis

Published: Saturday | November 9, 2013 0 Comments

Ryon Jones, Staff Reporter

Jamaica College (JC) became the second team through to the semi-final of the 2013 Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup after getting by last year's beaten finalists Hydel 4-0 in their Group H top of the table clash yesterday at Constant Spring Sports Complex playing field.

The 22-time champions, JC, were led to victory by a brace from 16-year-old Sheldon McKoy (18th, 31st) with captain Junior Flemmings (78th) getting the third; his 18th goal of the season. The fourth goal was netted by Akino Bailey in the second minute of added time to seal JC's passage to the semis, alongside defending champions St George's College.

The victory saw JC top the group with maximum nine points, while Hydel ended with six.

"It was a tactical performance, and I think the guys followed instructions and they played well," JC's coach, Miguel Coley, said. "We came out of the blocks slow in the second round, but as we go along we are improving and it is good going into the semi-finals with a four-goal win."

Hydel's evening got off to a bad start as they were forced into an early substitution after playmaker Jaheel Chamberlain suffered a 16th-minute injury.

Though believing Chamberlain's absence affected his team, Hydel's coach, Geoffery Maxwell, gave credit to JC.

"I think JC is the best Manning Cup team I have played against," Maxwell reasoned. "I think JC also, to me, is the team to beat in the Manning Cup because they are very strong, very athletic, and they play together as a unit."

In the opening match of the double-header, which was of academic interest, Kingston College and Charlie Smith played to a 3-3 draw to both end the round with a point.

The Jerome Waite-coached Charlie Smith opened the scoring through Anthony Thompson (sixth) with Rafael Deacon (71st) and substitute Shamar Pryce (89th) also netting.

The Donovan Hayles-conditioned KC hit back courtesy of strikes from Owayne Stone (14th, 23rd) and substitute Kashane Jones (90+3).

Charlie Smith fielded only one regular starter as they looked ahead to Tuesday's Walker Cup semi-final against defending champions Wolmer's Boys.

"The game was about giving these youngsters the opportunity to play so that Jamaica can see the talent pool that we have for next season," Waite shared.

KC have won the third-most Manning Cup titles, 14, but the last came in 1986. Hayles, who took charge of the school's football programme two years ago, did not expect that drought to end this year.

"When I went to Kingston College it was a five-year programme that we looked on, because the culture of football in the school just wasn't there anymore."

Wolmer’s, JC to meet for Manning Cup crown

Heroes’ Circle school shock STGC; meet JC in final

THERE will be a new ISSA/LIME Manning Cup champion after Jamaica College and Wolmer's Boys advanced to the final with contrasting wins over Excelsior High and St George's College, respectively, at the National Stadium yesterday.

In arguably the match of the season, St George's College (STGC) relinquished their title in a pulsating 4-3 penalty loss to Wolmer's after playing to an exciting 4-4 draw after regulation and extra time.

Meanwhile, Jamaica College (JC) easily dispatched Excelsior 4-0 in the curtain-raiser, setting the stage for what should be another mouth-watering final against Wolmer's on Saturday, November 23.

STGC, winner of the last two seasons, battled hard to hold their title coming from behind twice before taking what looked like the winning lead twice, but were pegged back by the Heroes' Circle school in one of the most dramatic games with several twists.

Demar Rose, still mourning the death of his mother, opened the scoring for Wolmer's in the 26th minute before national Under-20 striker Oshane Boothe pulled the 'Light Blues' level in the 31st minute. Five minutes later, an own goal restored Wolmer's Boys' lead before two goals in the 76th and 79th minutes by Boothe and Martin Davis gave STGC what looked like the winning advantage.

But Wolmer's never relented and Kemario Osbourne sent the game into extra time, equalising in the 83rd minute.

With 20 minutes of extra time, captain Ryan Miller fired the defending champions into another lead in extra time scoring in the 92nd minute and with time running out, captain and former National Under-17 defender Kemo Wallace pulled Wolmer's level in the 106th minute and into the dreaded penalty kicks.

The signs were not good for STGC, who lost last week to Excelsior in penalty kicks in the Walker Cup, and when the usually reliable Miller missed the first kick, the writing was on the wall. Boothe also missed the second as St George's crashed out of the competition in dramatic fashion.

Successful kicks by Jaheel Hyde, Osbourne and Chavis Brooks had put Wolmer's on the cusp of a famous victory, and despite Rennico Clarke missing their fourth kick, Hakeem Smith held his nerves and sent hundreds of Wolmer's supporters into a frenzy.

Winning coach Ludlow Bernard said once it reached penalty kicks he was very confident of winning.

"All I wanted was one save. I was confident of five kicks. We knew we had to fight very hard to win this one. But my players have a never-say-die attitude and that is what is going to carry us through next Saturday when we play Jamaica College," said Bernard.

Neville Bell, the STGC coach, thought his team played well and congratulated his conqueror. "If you give people room who can play football, they are going to hurt you and when we went ahead 4-3, even though the plan was to defend, I thought they backed off and allowed them some freedom at the top of the box and they scored," Bell said.

In the curtain-raiser, JC thumped Excelsior 4-0 and gained sweet revenge for their Walker Cup defeat, which also had ended their unbeaten run.

National Under-17 captain Junior Flemmings notched his 19th and 20th goals of the season in the third and 51st minutes.

Rafiek Bryan got on the scoresheet in the 29th minute before Sheldon McKoy put the icing on the cake in the 70th.

Head coach Miguel Coley had no doubt his team would make it back to the final after losing to St George's in 2011.

"Thanks to the power of technology we saw some weaknesses in this team and we utlised that today and came out on top," said Coley.

Meanwhile, Leebert Halliman was peeved his team had to play four games in a short space of time and thought that was their downfall.

"This competition doesn't help us at all, especially when you reach this stage. The playing field is not level because some teams get 'x' amount of rest, while I play four games in 11 days, and that hurt us," he lamented.

FOOTBALL: 2013 Manning Cup Final - JC triumph in thriller

Published: Sunday | November 24, 2013 0 Comments

Robert Bailey, Sunday Gleaner Writer

Jamaica College carved a 25th lien on one of the most coveted schoolboy football trophies at the National Stadium yesterday.

It took a gruelling, energy-sapping 120 minutes - 90 minutes regulation time and 30 minutes extra time - to decide the winners. And at the end, surrounded by his teammates and students of the Old Hope Road-based school, captain Junior Flemming lifted the coveted trophy after a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

The teams were locked at 2-2 at the end of normal time and it took another nine minutes for substitute Ronald Brown to crash home the winner after being sent clear by Raffique Bryan.

It was a ding-dong battle throughout. JC took the lead when Wolmer's defender Rennico Clarke put the ball past his own goalkeeper in the 26th minute. Jaheel Hyde then struck twice (30th and 64th minute) to hand Wolmer's a 2-1 advantage before Bryan sent the match into extra time when headed past the Wolmer's goalkeeper Dane Lee three minutes from full time.

Miguel Coley, coach of JC, who was in tears after yesterday's victory, said he was overwhelmed by his team's success.

"It was an excellent performance from us and I thank God for the victory," said Coley. "I have said from the start of the season that teamwork makes the dream work and we did today."

Wolmer's coach Ludlow Bernard was very disappointed with the result.

"I am not going to make any excuses," said Bernard. "I think we were unfortunate in the latter part of the game as a couple of our player weren't able to give 100 per cent.

clear-cut chances missed

Wolmer's came out looking the better team in the early exchanges, but they missed a couple of clear-cut chances. Rennico Clarke's powerful header from a Jason Greenland corner kick shaved the JC crossbar. Then the fleet-footed Jordan James, who tormented the JC defenders with his pace-clever dribbling skills, also came close, but powerful effort from 15 yards was well saved by JC's goalkeeper Courtney Dowie.

However, after looking the better team, Wolmer's and their supporters were left stunned in the 26th minute. A long-range pass from Flemming created confusion in the Wolmer's defence and Rennico Clarke sliced his clearance over the head of goalkeeper Lee and into the back of the net.

Wolmer's found the equaliser four minutes later when Hyde converted a spectacular free kick.

Hyde netted Wolmer's second goal 15 minutes inside the second half when he arrived at the near post to head powerfully past Dowie. However, JC forced their way back into the game with a late equaliser. Bryan sent a downward header which bounced in front of and past the Wolmer's goalkeeper.

St George’s footballer dies after collapsing during match
It’s almost like I lost my son — Coach Bell

A mere two minutes after the referee’s whistle signalled the opening of yesterday’s Manning Cup encounter between St George’s College and Excelsior High School, young Dominic James, captain of the ‘Light Blues’, collapsed on the Stadium East field.

Approximately 43 minutes later, Jamaica’s schoolboy football fraternity was plunged into deep mourning as news came back from University Hospital of the West Indies that the 18-year-old had died.

The tragedy was too heavy for his teammates. They fell to the ground in tears.

There were no dry eyes in the Excelsior camp either as they sought to comfort their opponents.

“This one tough, this one tough,” said a weeping Neville Bell, the St George’s coach. “I was very concerned because I hadn’t seen it [when Dominic fell], but when I looked at his eyes they were very glazed.”

Dominic’s fall was off the ball. But on seeing him go down, the Excelsior player closest to him frantically signalled for help.

Assistant referee Keeble Williams stopped the game immediately. St George’s team physician Dr Ivor Alexander and his counterpart from Excelsior ran to the young man’s aid. Both tried to revive him before he was placed in his father’s Honda CR-V and rushed to the hospital.

Dr Alexander told the Jamaica Observer that Dominic was foaming at the mouth and gasping for breath. “His body was shaking... he showed signs of a seizure,” the doctor said. “We wanted oxygen and couldn’t get any. We put him on his left side, but he was still gasping for breath. By then we got... a vehicle to carry him to the hospital.”

With the youngster off to get medical attention, the game resumed. Akeem Robotham had given St George’s a 26th-minute lead, before the dreadlocked Thorne Buchanan struck twice in the 30th and 38th minutes to give Excelsior a 2-1 advantage. However, when the shocking news was delivered on the stroke of half-time the game was called off.

“We had two doctors there and immediately they said ‘take him’. I think we have to give the assistant referee a lot of credit because it was off the ball he went down, and it was the assistant who stopped the game immediately and called us,” said Bell. “That has never happened before. God, I know we have to go on, but boy this one tough,” he said.

“I know he was alive when he left here, but when we called I heard that he had passed. But I pray for his mother and father. He is the only child. He is such a wonderful child. He is a great student athlete, he has so many subjects. He came to us from JC (Jamaica College) a couple of years ago and the fact that he was named captain this year we realised that he was probably the leader for the team, but again, boy, this one tough, it’s almost like I lost my son,” said an obviously distraught Bell.

Dr Alexander, clearly shaken by the tragedy, pleaded with the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) to provide proper medical assistance at games.

“It’s not just oxygen, we’re talking the basic resuscitation kit or even an Ambu bag. Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation won’t help. CPR, maybe yes, but that alone won’t help, because after CPR you need backup equipment for the basic support of life, and oxygen included,” said Dr Alexander.

As news of the tragedy spread, JC team manager Ian Forbes extended condolence to Dominic’s family.

“The entire Jamaica College fraternity is saddened at the tragic loss of young Dominic James,” he told the

Observer after his team’s home match against Vauxhall High. “Dominic started here at Jamaica College and came up through the system. He was a member of the winning Manning Cup teams of 2013 and 2014.

“He transferred [two years ago] to St George’s but he still maintained the relationship with the team. They are totally devastated, so we would like to convey our condolence to the James family on this tragic loss,” Forbes said.

Last night, Sports Minister Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange expressed profound grief at Dominic’s passing.

“Like the rest of the country, I am very sad to receive this news,” she said in a statement. “No one expected this. Young Dominic, by all indications, had been doing well. He represented his school well... and had a very bright future. So this is quite a shock. All of Jamaica will mourn with his family and with his school at this time. We all must keep them in our prayers and in our hearts.”

Jamaica Football Federation President Captain Horace Burrell also expressed condolence to the James family.

“Other than his representation at the school and club levels, Dominic was just this year a part of the National Under-20 training camp and was a player and leader highly respected,” Burrell said and extended sympathies to “the St George’s College fraternity, the ISSA family, and all those who played with and knew this talented son of Jamaica”.
